Το επίτευγμα τους κάνει αισιόδοξους ότι μια ημέρα θα καταφέρουν να «δουν» τον θάνατο των πρώτων άστρων που δημιουργήθηκαν μετά την «Μεγάλη Έκρηξη» (Μπιγκ Μπανγκ) και τα οποία «έσπειραν» τα πιο βαριά στοιχεία έως τις κοσμικές εσχατιές, καθιστώντας έτσι εφικτή τη δημιουργία των γαλαξιών, των πλανητών και τελικά της ζωής.
Συνδυάζοντας εικόνες από το τηλεσκόπιο Καναδά - Γαλλίας - Χαβάης, που βρίσκεται στο όρος Μάουνα Κέα της τελευταίας, οι επιστήμονες ανακάλυψαν δύο σούπερ - νόβα, μία που συνέβη πριν από 10,4 δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια και άλλη μία πριν από περίπου 12,1 δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια (δηλαδή εξερράγη περίπου 1,6 δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια μετά τη γέννηση του σύμπαντος). Έως τώρα η πιο μακρινή και παλαιότερη σούπερ - νόβα που είχε γίνει αντιληπτή, είχε συμβεί πριν από 10,8 δισ. χρόνια.
Οι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον αστρονόμο Τζεφ Κουκ του Κέντρου Αστροφυσικής του Πανεπιστημίου Τεχνολογίας Σουίνμπερν, κοντά στη Μελβούρνη της Αυστραλίας, έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο περιοδικό "Nature", σύμφωνα με το "Science" και το "New Scientist". Οι μελλοντικές έρευνες σε τόσο απομακρυσμένες και ισχυρές εκρήξεις μπορεί να ρίξουν περισσότερο φως στην εξέλιξη του πρώιμου σύμπαντος.
Οι πιο ισχυρές θερμοπυρηνικές εκρήξεις σούπερ - νόβα, όπως αυτές που μόλις ανακάλυψαν οι αστρονόμοι, είναι τόσο ισχυρές που για ένα διάστημα ξεπερνούν σε φωτεινότητα κάθε άλλο άστρο στους γαλαξίες τους. Την τελευταία δεκαετία, οι επιστήμονες έχουν ανακαλύψει αυτή τη νέα κατηγορία «σούπερ-υπέρλαμπρων» σούπερ-νόβα, έως 100 φορές πιο φωτεινών από τις υπόλοιπες. Πρόκειται για πολύ σπάνια γεγονότα, τα οποία παράγουν τρομακτικές ποσότητες ενέργειας και συνεπώς έχουν δυνητικά μεγάλη καταστροφική ισχύ. Μία και μόνο τέτοια έκρηξη θα μπορούσε να σπείρει τον θάνατο σε ένα μεγάλο μέρος του μητρικού γαλαξία, αν αυτός είναι σχετικά μικρός, ή να τον «γονιμοποιήσει» με πολύτιμα χημικά στοιχεία, αν είναι αρκετά μεγάλος.
